While Los Angeles had been an amazing time, having been able to hang out and make friends with some new people, see a little bit of the town, it had also been back to reality for Thayer. He had to get back to his interning duties in Cleveland. He was realizing however, his little trip to Los Angeles was racking up quite a few followers on his twitter account. Blake’s appearance on the Ellen show had people speculating about something going on between himself and Blake, and then that combined with paparazzi pictures from the beach with him in them wasn’t helping. Thayer had never been against fame. He wasn’t hiding from it. It was almost expected, he hoped, that his name would be known one day; for his producing and songwriting abilities, sure. He could at least fly a little under the radar as the guy behind the hit song. He just hadn’t expected his name to be out there this soon, or for this reason. But Thayer wasn’t upset about it. People speculated about a lot of things surrounding celebrities, and Blake had to deal with this all the time. It wasn’t some horrible thing to be linked to her in tabloids. It was just that it also brought up the question of whether Thayer was just hanging around her because she was Blake Parker. People liked to talk about that too, and that was the one thing he hoped she didn’t think about him. Especially because of a lot of things she’d told him.
Thayer had hoped he could get to know her a little and see if he had any chance with her before he told her he was masquerade guy. It also gave him some time to get his own shit together. He didn’t want to tell her and not be exactly what she dreamed he was. What if he just wasn’t ready to be in a relationship with someone? He didn’t want her to find out it was him and then slash her dreams because mentally and emotionally he was someplace else. And not for lack of being interested, just other issues. Thayer had spent his college career so focused on school just so he was focused on anything but that summer before he left for school. It wasn’t so much that he was traumatized by it anything, he’d just left. And hadn’t exactly dealt with it. Thayer had left to go to Berklee and Berklee was his focus and that was it. But Berklee was ending soon. And Thayer was realizing he couldn’t run away from things he couldn’t control. He wanted to be in love with someone, because dammit he was a hopeless romantic and he didn’t want to spend his life alone. And that meant giving his whole self to someone else and he wanted to be able to do that. He wanted to be fair to someone, and not be that, that other person was always wondering if he was all there, if he was okay. He WAS okay. He was realizing. He needed to come to terms with whatever feelings he’d decided could wait. He could face them now. He’d be okay.
But even so, theoretically, when he felt whole and willing to put his energy into just one woman, he was still wondering if Blake was supposed to be her. She was really great, and he knew they’d had a connection at the masquerade. She’d been right, it was nothing short of magical. But the reality was that the masks had to come off. And even though he’d gotten to know her as Blake, and he Thayer, he was still just an intern and she was still Blake Parker. She’d said herself she felt like she couldn’t date people unless they were celebrities too. Because normal people could never get to know her on that level, and even though he had, she’d asked, if you weren’t an intern, would you have ever known me? Probably not. Was it just luck that he had met her? He couldn’t tell if it was a spoof or fate that they had met, but it sure as hell was clear that people like her weren’t supposed to date people like him. Maybe he needed to go be something, make a name for himself that she could be with. But that didn’t make sense, if she was interested, she should be regardless of the amount of fame he gained. He just couldn’t shake the thought that the lucky chance he had earned an internship at her label and met her, did not happen to normal people. Maybe it was a spoof. He was gonna go ahead and be naïve about it and let himself think it was the universe throwing him a bone. Something felt right about her. Maybe he just needed to convince her he could be that guy. Even though he wasn’t a celebrity. Though, the rate his twitter followers was expanding, who even knew at this point.
It was late when Thayer finally got back to his place from the airport, locking the door behind him and set his bag down. Maybe he was a moron to pursue Blake Parker. Like maybe Lilah had a lot of valid things to say. But things had fallen into place too perfectly to ignore. And finally for the first time since he was 18, he was admitting he was lonely. It had been so easy to close himself off. Now he just wanted to let his walls down and invite someone in. Thayer sat down on the couch, sinking into it as he heard a knock on the door. Okay not literally let someone in. Thayer got up, moving toward the door and opened it, seeing Cal standing there with a bag in hand, “Did I know you were coming?” “Hi, how are you? I’m fine, thanks for asking. Just in the neighborhood, thought you wouldn’t mind if I crashed at your place,” he said sarcastically, pushing past Thayer as Thayer closed the door behind him. “First of all, you were on the Ellen Show. And that’s really rad. You texted and said you were flying back so I came out.” “You came all the way from Boston to tell me it was rad that I was mentioned on the Ellen Show?” “Sure, yeah. You got any beer?” Thayer went to the small kitchen, grabbing them both a beer and came back, handing Cal his. “You’re just here because you miss me so damn much,” he smiled jokingly, taking a drink. “Oh yeah, for sure. Actually, I’ve been thinking a lot lately.” “Oh god.” “Look even before this whole, internship, being pals with Blake Parker, Ellen Show thing happened, I was giving a lot of thought to our music.” “And?” “And I think we should continue to pursue it.” “Cal, I thought we agreed it was just a hobby thing.” “Thayer come on, we both know it’s not a hobby for you. And we make a great pair. We made really awesome music together, we collaborate well, we’re always on the same page. And you having this internship, you have all the tools we need to be awesome. You have connections, you can market us, you get the business side of it. And just today, that little TV mention, have you seen your twitter followers?” “Yeah I know…” “Yeah, so here’s a chance to make something of it, people are interested in you right now.” “No they’re interested in Blake Parker’s prospective next boyfriend. And you don’t think that feels wrong to use Blake’e fame as a launching point?” “We’re not using her fame, it’s not our fault she likes talking about you. Here look,” he pulled his laptop out of his bag, propping it on the coffee table and pointed to the YouTube page on the screen, “I was checking things out on the plane. All people had to do was google your name and our music is everywhere. Our video views have like, quadrupled in a few hours. Blake may have mentioned you, but they’re remembering this. Thayer look at the facts, people are buying our music on iTunes as we speak. That was initially just gas money. Now it’s… enough for a plane ticket home. And growing.” Thayer looked over at Cal, the sparkle in his eye, shaking his head. “You’re insane.” “No, I am recognizing an opportunity. It’s not as if we’re just starting now, trying to capitalize on five minutes of fame. We were an established music duo, with stuff already out there. People are just liking what we’ve already started.” He paused, seeing Thayer’s uncertainty, “Won’t you at least consider making music again? As Timeflies? I miss it, I know you do.”
Thayer thought for a moment. It felt really wrong to just jump into making music with Cal again because people were all about trying to figure out who he was. But Cal was right, he couldn’t control people looking at their old stuff. And really it was no different than before, except now their stage was a little bigger. All Cal had ever wanted to do was perform on stage anyways. And Thayer… well he just liked writing and producing. It could be cool if they gained a bigger fan base. “I don’t know. I feel weird about it. But I’ll think about it.” “Okay you think about it. In your room. Cuz I’m gonna sleep on your couch.” “You really came out here to ask me about starting up Timeflies again?” “Well okay, maybe I sort of missed you.” “Such a softie.” “So are the rumors true?” Thayer looked at him questioningly, “About what?” “About Blake Parker. Are you guys a thing?” “No Blake and I are not a thing. I’ve been working some on her record, that’s all.” “Not working on anything else of hers?” “…No.” “I’m just asking. She thinks you’re pretty great.” Thayer was tired, and he wasn’t expecting to be bombarded by this kid and he certainly needed some rest before he explained that situation. “I’m going to bed,” he said, standing up and took his bag to his room, “Don’t drink all my beer.” “Oh boo. Nighty night princess, sweet dreams. About your country girlfriend.” He joked.
Thayer shut his door, leaving the light off, falling onto his bed. He needed a day to think about this. It felt too weird. He had to worry about his school and internship projects before his side stuff with Cal. If he even thought that was a good idea. Which he kind of didn’t. Maybe they should wait it out and see the responses of people over a length of time. That seemed more reasonable. It would be irresponsible to jump into anything. He worried about what Blake would think. He didn’t want to ruined what foundation they’d built thus far. Thayer fell asleep in his clothes thinking about country princesses and music hooks, and masked people, and Ellen Degeneres.
