Bobbie looked up at the clock, waiting for the minutes to go by. Tick, tick, tick. The sound echoed throughout the quiet classroom. It was moments when teachers called for everyone to be quiet that she relished now. She’d gone from a social butterfly to someone who would rather avoid most social interaction at school if necessary upon the death of her mother. Returning hadn’t been the easiest; all of the speculation. Was she still dating Nick? Did her mother commit suicide? Was she still going to be in the musical? Was she going to be prom queen? Would she only be prom queen because she didn’t deserve it and people just felt sorry for her? Was she dating Derek? Were they hooking up? Bobbie took in a quick breath as the bell went off. Finally, she could go to lunch and just relax and not have to worry about people staring at her or what poems William Shakespeare focused on unrequited love. Just the night before she had been on skype with Derek’s older brother Dylan, playing the song for him that she’d written for Derek. Overall it seemed to be that he liked it. Now it was just a matter of shooting basically a home made video for it so that she could give it to Derek when he left to go back home when school was over.
Bobbie put all of her things away into her locker, not caring where it was placed unlike her ordinarily so organized self. Things had changed upon her return to school. As she walked towards the cafeteria, she pushed the sleeves of the shirt she was wearing up, currently wearing one of Derek’s few dress shirts that he had. She brought her fingertips to her mothers necklace, playing with it delicately as she went to the lunch line, going through the salad line for herself and then getting an extra helping of fries for Derek. She watched him for a moment, at the table near the window as the sun cascaded over him, metaphorically illuminating him as the angel that had been sent to her in her darkest hour. Bobbie took in a deep breath, avoiding any and all conversation with everyone else before setting the tray down next to Derek. “ Hey,” she said, making sure not to give him a kiss or anything since they were still at school and he seemed to like to save that type of behavior for home. “ I got you some more fries,” she said, looking down at the tray he had. Bobbie took one of the carrots off of his try, biting into it so that she could eat it as she transferred the French fries from her plate to his, and the carrots off of his plate for herself. “ We’re going over scenes that you aren’t in for the first hour of practice that way you can have soccer practice, and then when you get to the rehearsal we can go over your stuff,” she said bringing her legs up to criss-cross them underneath her bum as she settled onto the seat. She felt herself slightly more relaxed as he placed his hand on her leg as he often did. “I still haven’t decided which college I’m going to, but I don’t think dad knows what it’s like to just….. He thinks I’m an idiot for wanting to put college on hold and focus on music since I haven’t exactly had a lot of knocks at my door.” she said biting into another carrot mindlessly. It wasn’t exactly that fair of her ; that she hated the idea of giving up on broadway and going to college, yet she always argued to Derek that college should be something he should consider when he does go home.
Bobbie gave a sigh, feeling her heart give an instant ache at the idea of him leaving. She knew he had to, she knew it made sense for him. But the idea of losing two of the most important people in her life in such a short amount of time just seemed like the most unfair thing in the world to her. Bobbie chewed quietly, looking up at some of the prom posters that were plastered all over the walls. She hadn’t even decided if she was going, and yet it seemed like people had taken to campaigning for her to be queen all by themselves. Interestingly enough, she saw even more support for Derek to be King than for Nick. Which had to be getting under Nick’s skin more than she could possibly imagine. It was the staring that bothered her the most. And she could tell they were all doing it now. Staring at her and Derek, whispering to one another about the couple who was quiet and mainly kept to themselves. It must have seemed like a drastic change to watch Bobbie go from being so vocal and the spotlight, to retreating herself to the solace of isolation. Did people assume that Derek was the reason for the change in her behavior, or were they too stupid to realize the impact of her mothers’ death? So here she was, rambling off about everything to Derek that she would have to her girlfriends, if she felt the desire to be a part of their world anymore. But she didn’t. They didn’t understand her the way that he did, the way that only someone who had suffered a great loss could.
Not to mention that everyone seemed interested in just exactly ‘what’ they had done. It was pretty well known throughout the school that Bobbie wouldn’t sleep with Nick. Yet, she did very little to hide what was going on with Derek. After all, she was sitting in the middle of the cafeteria wearing his shirt. And to all of the people who muttered under their breaths, whispering how she was sleeping with him because she was trying to get over her mothers death and looking for anything to fill the void, she literally flipped off. No facial expression, no energy, just a lifted middle finger to their ignorance. Sleeping with him had been nothing short of realizing what exactly he meant to her and finding the best way to express it. By the time the bell rang to signal that they needed to go back to class, Derek had already finished working on whatever he was working on his computer so that they could have a few minutes completely to themselves. Bobbie gave him a quick hug, “ I brought something for you to eat after practice so you aren’t starving during rehearsals,” she, giving him a slight smile. She stood by his side as they walked down the hallway, neither of them reaching for the others hand. It was the moment that he walked away from her classroom after walking her to class that she dreaded the most, staring at the numerous faces that were just staring at her, almost expectantly. Bobbie moved slowly and quietly through the classroom, doing her best to go unnoticed but knew it was impossible as she slid into the back row, when the girl next to her whispered “ So what’s fucking Derek like?”
And that’s how she wound up in the principal’s office, holding ice over her hand which was now swollen, and she swore it felt broken though that might be an exaggeration. “ So then you punched her?” the principal questioned. Bobbie blinked, staring blankly ahead. The principal took in a deep breath, pinching the bridge of his nose before he readjust his glasses and looked down at the paperwork on his desk. “ Bobbie, I understand that you’re going through a difficult time,”. Bobbie bounced her foot where her legs were crossed. “ Some things are meant to be private .My entire life isn’t meant to be on a stage for entertainment,” she said dryly. “ Look can I just see Derek real quick?” she questioned out of annoyance. “ I’m sure he’s heard by now, and he’s probably wanting to talk to me,” Bobbie said starting to stand up. “ Bobbie, I have to punish you. I’m literally bound here. You can’t just attack people.” he stated. Bobbie took in a deep breath, “ Well, you’re not going to suspend me because that would mean that you would lose your musical which is bringing in revenue. And you can’t really do anything else, because as you pointed out.. I’ve had a bit of a tough year, and none of your taxpayers in this city, even that’s kids parents, would take lightly to the fact that you punished me in this situation versus addressing the real problem which is your school has failed in providing an adequate space for a student to excel. Instead, you’ve created an atmosphere where other students feel like it’s okay to pry into the life of another student who just lost their parent, when you should have used it as an opportunity to speak out on compassion and boundaries. So. I will ask again. May I go talk to Derek now?” she asked, lifting her eyebrow before she dropped the ice on his desk and made her way out of his office.
